Design Trends I DO NOT Like

I am a very passionate person, at times, that includes the things I DO NOT LIKE , AT ALL. As I have previously and will continue to share designs I adore, I thought it would be fun to dive into the world of designs I am less fond of… As an Interior Design student, I am exposed to enormous amounts of different designs and styles, which is an amazing gift, but it can at times be, shall I say, interesting.
For the most part, the picks on this list will be somewhat obvious things that anyone with an ounce of taste would have reservations about, however there are a few things on this list that fall into a more personal disliking category.
Karate Chopped Pillows!!!

In case you have been gifted with the colossal privilege of being unfamiliar with this trend, the gist of it is karate copping a pillow in the middle with your hand to get a more angular look. Now what might be wrong with this, well first off, I think everyone can use their eyes to know it is HIDEOUS, but it’s also plain stupid. I HATE karate chopped pillows, they take away the entire integrity of what a pillow is and should be. A pillow so to add comfort, texture and softness to a shape, this karate chopped look goes against all of these fundamental characteristics. And boy does it look CHEAP, straight out of some has been HGTV shows. I truly cannot stress enough how fucking grotesque this trend is, it’s an insult to both pillows and design as a whole.
Grey

The next trend I DO NOT like is also fairly obviously ugly, but it is gray. In the start of the 2010s it became a trend to strip a house of character when selling it in order to play to the masses, following the backlash of overly styled and colorful houses of the 70s. This of course makes sense, however making the entire home gray is the WORST remedy I could possibly ever think of. There is nothing design students hate more than gray!!! Having the majority, if not all of a space in gray, robs the space of character, warmth, depth, personality, comfort, expandability and a million more essential things to a home. I feel I can summarize my entire point in this single sentence; gray is for houses, not homes.
"Renovated"

Lastly, let’s talk about the “renovated” trend. To clarify, I am not against renovations, I am specifically referencing the subcategory of renovations where the original beauty of a home is taken away to create an uninteresting house. For example, taking away crown molding, or putting in cheap vinyl flooring, or taking out original tiles and replacing them with overused 2014 pinterest esc styles. The stripping of a beautiful character of a home’s core to create a bland stack of walls.
Thank You!!
